Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) and Permanent Makeup (PMU) Aftercare

After Care:

We have compiled a list of the most important considerations after your treatment. The aim is to avoid disturbing your new pigment deposits, and of course you should do all you can to avoid any interference with the healing process.

After every session:

Of course, all this needle work will require your scalp to heal a bit, and this means that you cannot allow yourself to interfere with it at all for the next few days. There are scabs that form over each of the needle marks, and when they heal up, they take a bit of the pigment with them. This is considered as fading by many people, even though it is not exactly that.

Following the SMP procedure you may experience some tenderness, redness and some peeling of skin. Please follow these instructions:

Do not scratch the dry skin off as this may remove pigment.

  • Do not shampoo your hair for 5 days.
  • Warm water may be used to rinse your head after 3 days.
  • Do not apply any product containing Minoxidil.
  • Make sure you do not use cosmetics and other products, which contain a high value of alcohol in them.
  • Do not apply any styling products for at least 7 days.
  • Do not swim in a chlorinated pool or sea water for at least 7 days.
  • Avoid excessive sweating for 7 days.
  • Make sure you have proper sun protection each time you are in the sun, at least for the scalp, in order to preserve the pigmentation.

Your treatment will require 3 sessions to achieve the desired results. Fading of the pigment is expected in between the sessions.

If at any time you are unsure, please contact us.

Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) and Permanent Makeup (PMU) Aftercare FAQs

General Aftercare Principles for Both SMP and PMU:

  • Follow Your Practitioner's Instructions: Each individual and procedure is unique. Always prioritize the specific aftercare guidelines provided by your trained SMP or PMU technician.

  • Keep the Treated Area Clean: Maintaining cleanliness is crucial for preventing infection and ensuring proper healing.

  • Avoid Touching and Picking: Refrain from touching, scratching, or picking at the treated area. This can dislodge pigment and lead to scarring or uneven results.

  • Sun Protection is Essential: Protect the treated area from direct sunlight and UV exposure. This can fade the pigment prematurely.

  • Be Patient with the Healing Process: Initial darkness or fading is normal. Allow the area to heal naturally, as the final results will take time to fully develop.

Specific FAQs for SMP:

  • When can the scalp get wet after SMP? Generally, avoid getting the scalp wet for the first 3-5 days after treatment.

  • When can the head be washed after SMP? After the initial dry period, the scalp can be gently rinsed with cool water. Typically, using a mild, sulfate-free shampoo can be resumed after 5 days, according to Ahead Ink Scalp Micropigmentation.

  • When can exercise be resumed after SMP? Avoid intense exercise or activities that cause excessive sweating for at least 5 days following treatment.

  • When can the head be shaved after SMP? Shaving is possible after 5 days with an electric foil shaver. A razor blade should be avoided for at least 10-15 days.

  • When can swimming be resumed after SMP? Avoid swimming in chlorinated pools, saltwater, and freshwater for at least 30 days.

  • Should the scalp be moisturized after SMP? Yes, daily moisturization after the initial healing period is recommended to prevent dryness and maintain results.

  • When can products be applied to the scalp after SMP? Avoid lotions, creams, or oils for at least 5 days. You can start moisturizing on the 6th day, according to Reddit.

  • What kind of moisturizer should be used? Choose fragrance-free or organic moisturizers.

  • Can a hat be worn after SMP? Yes, a loose-fitting hat can be worn to protect the scalp from the sun.

  • What if itching or bumps occur? Consult with the SMP provider or physician if you have concerns about itching or skin reactions.

Specific FAQs for PMU (e.g., Nano Brows, Lip Blush, Eyeliner):

  • How long does permanent makeup take to heal? The healing process typically takes 7-14 days, though it can vary. Full color stabilization may take up to 4-6 weeks.

  • Can makeup be worn on the treated area? Avoid applying makeup to the treated area until it is fully healed, usually 7-10 days.

  • Can harsh skincare products be used? Avoid harsh skincare products like retinol and acids near the treated area for at least 2 weeks before and after the procedure.

  • What about swelling and redness? Slight swelling and redness are normal and typically subside within 24-48 hours. Use cold compresses or over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication as needed.

  • When can a touch-up be done? Touch-ups are typically recommended after 6-8 weeks to perfect the results.

Important Notes:

  • Infections: While rare with proper care, monitor for signs of infection (e.g., persistent redness, swelling, pus, fever). Contact your provider or healthcare professional if these symptoms occur.

  • Scabbing and Peeling: Allow scabs to fall off naturally. Do not pick or scratch, as this can affect the outcome.

  • Sun Protection is Crucial: Continued sun protection is essential to prevent premature fading of the pigment.

  • Individual Healing: Healing times vary, so be patient and follow your practitioner's guidance.
